The Seattle Kraken knocked off the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference First Round on Sunday, defeating the defending Stanley Cup winners 2-1 at Ball Arena.
The Kraken are in the second round and will face the Dallas Stars in Game 1 on Tuesday at American Airlines Centre in Dallas (9:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, CBC, SN, TVAS).
The Kraken made the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time after finishing 30th in the NHL in their inaugural season, receiving the first wild card in the West.
Never before has a team won its first playoff series by defeating the defending champion. Seattle, on the other hand, was the first.
The Kraken won three of the four games in Denver and never panicked in a seesaw series, taking a 1-0 lead, falling behind 2-1, taking a 3-2 lead, and rallying back from a 4-1 setback in Game 6 to win Game 7.
They had 15 players score without obtaining a goal from forward Jared McCann, who led the team with 40 goals in the regular season, or forward Andre Burakovsky, who had 13 goals.
McCann did not return after Game 4. Burakovsky hasn't appeared in a game since February 7.
Whatever happened last season, this was a 100-point team this season. During the regular season, the Kraken went 2-0-1 versus the Avalanche, including a 2-0-0 victory in Denver.
They had 13 players score 13 goals or more and averaged 3.52 goals per game, tying them with the New Jersey Devils for fourth in the NHL.
The Kraken have had multiple firsts in the last two weeks, including their first Game 7 victory. They will now make their maiden journey to the second round.
